Speech Writer
How can you be a successful speech writer? There can be many occasions when a speech is required such as: acceptance ceremony, wedding, graduation, company parties, retirement speeches, eulogies and other times in your life. If you don’t enjoy public speaking or feel like you’re at a loss about what to say, here are a few tips that can help you write an effective speech that fits the occasion you intend it for.
Plan your speech. Think about what you want to say, your audience and what message needs to come across. Start by planning on paper with ideas. A few rough drafts later you can have a good idea of what you want to say. Planning it in sections with an introduction, a body and a summary is a good idea. Decide if you want jokes or funny stories added as well.
Write down your speech. There may be several revisions required but you’ll know when it feels pretty good. Get some feedback by practicing your speech in front of a friend or spouse. Ask for constructive criticism and for suggestions. Two heads can often be better than one and practicing it in front of someone else will help you to memorize the speech as well.

A successful speech writer is prepared with lots of practice. Looking at your audience instead of reading from a sheet of paper can make a difference to your delivery. Try to memorize your speech but bring a copy of it for reference in case you need help. Small recipe sized cards are a great idea with your whole speech typed on it or even just your important points so you can be sure that you have the gist of what you want to say written down so that you don’t forget an important part of the speech.
How can you be an effective speech presenter? You may dislike public speaking and be filled with butterflies in your stomach but try to look at the occasion as positively as you can. A positive outlook is just about as important as preparation.
Time your speech and be sure it’s not too long or too short and when giving your speech find a few friendly faces to focus on. It’s a good idea to find people in a few places so you can appear to scan the room as you speak without looking too nervous. Bring some water with you if you need to and don’t despair over the speech too much. Many people despise having to speak publicly but once they get through it, most realize that it wasn’t so bad after all.
Speak slowly and clearly so everyone can understand you and just do your best to give the best speech you can. Despite your best efforts at writing a good speech, they are not worth very much if your audience cannot hear you or if you speak so quick that the audience is unable to absorb the important parts of the speech. Effective speech writing and presentation can take a bit of practice.
